The “cyber-” prefix on anything seems to come with a curse. For example, Cyberpunk (2077), the Tesla cybertruck, and cyber… cafes? All of these entail high-tech concepts which creates the damned expectation of something so technologically advanced that it is exceedingly mind blowing. What about Cyberjaya? This city was initially established with the expectation of becoming Malaysia’s eco-friendly smart city, our own Silicon Valley, the Multimedia Super Corridor that connects us with the world. How far have we come since Cyberjaya’s conception in 1995? 

Cyberjaya as a Successful Smart City – an overview.

The key to understanding the expectation of Cyberjaya being a smart city let alone ‘cyber’ in the first place is to understand what a smart city is supposed to be in the first place. The concept of a smart city starts with an approach to urban development that makes use of digital technologies, information and communication technologies, as well as data-driven solutions. This approach is made with the intention to enhance the sustainability, efficiency and livelihood for its residents. These foundations create a solid technological backbone which support smart city initiatives as well as attract tech companies to the city for business. The establishment of tech infrastructure hence paves the way for smart solutions and services to be implemented in various sectors of the city. These include intelligent transport systems, smart surveillance, and energy-efficient buildings – among other things – which help enhance overall efficiency of city operations.
